Procrastination: Bad choice or Sad choice?
When your read about procrastination in self development blogs they all have the same thought about procrastination: “Procrastination is bad for productivity.”
You can also said: “Skin cancer is bad for beauty.” It intuitively sound true, it is scientific true, but it’s not most important point, because you can die.
Most important point about procrastination is not: “It hurts productivity.” Most important point is: “It make you sad”.
Yeah you can enjoy in procrastination hour or two, day or two and if you have fat bank account even for months, but eventually it will suck happiness from your life and make you feel helpless.
Irony is when you start thinking about procrastination in this way it is easier to solve problem.
Whatever you do for living and no matter how you enjoy it it will be always situation when you feel empty and have not enough will power to work. And what will you hear from self development guru: “If you selected your deepest desires, your unique ability for work you will always have will and you will always enjoy work.”
Are they mad? Am I confused for robot? They create you new sadness because now you think what’s wrong with you. Nothing.
Procrastination is just a way that your subconscious said you that you need to change what you doing and think about something different in this moment.
So how to get rid of procrastination. Find some fun and possibly productive thing to do.
For example. Yesterday I did not have will to work on some project that I need to finish and give myself a chance to live doing what I love (making computer programs). I was sure that if I try to work I will bored myself to death
, but I was also sure I will be more than happy to work on that some time latter. So I start to read my favorite blogs (self growth), find some interesting and motivating posts, then some bicycling (health) and book reading (plain fun). Yeah it took all day but this was more then a happy day, and today I back on track to work. If I try to do work yesterday, today my urge to procrastinate will be even more stronger than yesterday and eventually I will procrastinate after a few unproductive and sad days.
Live happy and productively by listening your subconscious.
